Police Crack Down on Reckless Drivers and Drink-Drivers during Easter Traffic in Finland

During the Easter holidays, the police in Finland monitored traffic in congested areas for outbound and return traffic. A total of 105 cases of aggravated endangering of traffic safety were recorded, with most of them occurring in Southern and Central Finland. While 20 people were injured in road traffic incidents, no traffic fatalities were reported, indicating a positive trend compared to the previous year. The police breathalyzed over 17,000 drivers and detected 326 cases of suspected driving under the influence, with one third of them being aggravated cases. More than half of these cases were caused by alcohol. Chief Superintendent Heikki Kallio of the National Police Board urged drivers to keep calm and adhere to traffic safety rules, as police monitoring will continue even after Easter, with motorcycles rejoining the force for traffic monitoring purposes.
