China’s National Bureau of Statistics Releases Report on Household Income and Consumption in Q1 2023: Per Capita Disposable Income Increases by 5.1% YoY, Per Capita Consumption Expenditure Up by 5.4%.

The National Bureau of Statistics of China has released a report summarizing the households’ income and consumption expenditure in the first quarter of 2023. According to the report, the per capita disposable income of residents nationwide was 10,870 yuan, which is a nominal increase of 5.1 percent over the same period last year, and a real increase of 3.8 percent after deducting price factors. The per capita disposable income of urban residents was 14,388 yuan, an increase of 4.0 percent, while the per capita disposable income of rural residents was 6,131 yuan, an increase of 6.1 percent.

The report also shows that the median per capita disposable income of residents nationwide was 8,895 yuan, an increase of 4.6 percent, and the median was 81.8 percent of the average. Among them, the median per capita disposable income of urban residents was 12,175 yuan, an increase of 3.9 percent, and the median was 84.6 percent of the average. The median per capita disposable income of rural residents was 4,864 yuan, an increase of 5.6 percent, and the median was 79.3 percent of the average.

The per capita consumption expenditure of residents nationwide was 6,738 yuan, a nominal increase of 5.4 percent over the same period of the previous year, and the actual increase was 4.0 percent after deducting the impact of price factors. The per capita consumption expenditure of urban residents was 8,303 yuan, an increase of 4.8 percent, while the per capita consumption expenditure of rural residents was 4,629 yuan, an increase of 5.5 percent.

The report also indicates that the national per capita consumption expenditure on food, tobacco, and alcohol was 2,128 yuan, accounting for 31.6 percent of the per capita consumption expenditure. The per capita consumption expenditure on education, culture, and recreation was 637 yuan, accounting for 9.4 percent of the per capita consumption expenditure. The per capita consumption expenditure on health care and medical services was 605 yuan, accounting for 9.0 percent of the per capita consumption expenditure.

Overall, the report provides an overview of the income and consumption patterns of households in China in the first quarter of 2023, which is useful for policymakers, businesses, and researchers who are interested in understanding the economic trends in China.
