EU agrees to new law promoting sustainable aviation fuels to cut emissions by 2/3 by 2050

The European Parliament and Council have agreed on the ReFuelEU Aviation proposal as part of the Fit for 55 package, which requires fuel suppliers to blend sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) with kerosene in increasing amounts from 2025. This is expected to reduce aircraft CO2 emissions by around two-thirds by 2050 compared to a ‘no action’ scenario and provide climate and air quality benefits. The mandate covers biofuels, recycled carbon fuels, and synthetic aviation fuels in line with the Renewable Energy Directive, but excludes food and feed crops to support sustainability objectives. The next steps involve formal adoption by the Parliament and the Council before the legislation enters into force.
