Norwegian police to no longer wear uniforms at Pride parades for safety reasons

Police in Norway have announced that officers will no longer wear their uniforms during Pride parades. The decision was made to ensure the safety and predictability of the event, as police uniforms are only to be worn while on duty. It is important that there is no confusion over who is working and who is not. The police’s role is to ensure that all Pride events can take place safely and smoothly.

The change in policy is related to security concerns based on the current threat and risk assessment. The police have been in discussions with LGBTQ+ organizations and their own employees about the reasons for no longer allowing exceptions to the uniform regulations.

According to Tone Vangen, Director of Emergency Preparedness at the Police Directorate, “There is a clear distinction between uniform use at work and in leisure time – including participation in other events and gatherings beyond Pride.” She further explains that the police will now revise their uniform regulations to account for the different settings where this may be a challenge. This work will start in the fall and will address various issues related to uniform use.

Despite the uniform change, the police will still support and participate in Pride events. The police stand for diversity, openness, and inclusivity. They will continue to celebrate Pride and encourage their employees to participate, even if they are not in uniform.

Finally, the police will ensure that all Pride events in Norway are safe and secure. They will assess the risks and work with local organizers to provide suitable security measures and personnel to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration.
