Employment rate increases for foreign-born individuals, according to Statistics Sweden

During the first quarter of 2023, the number of employed individuals was 5,187,000, non-seasonally adjusted. This is an increase of 111,000 compared to the first quarter of 2022. The total number of hours worked amounted to an average of 167.3 million per week. Calendar-adjusted, this corresponds to an increase of 6.2 percent. The number of unemployed individuals was 438,000, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.8 percent. Seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of employed individuals. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.3 percent.

“For some time now, both the number and proportion of employed foreign-born individuals have been increasing, which we can also see during the first quarter of 2023. We also see a continued decrease in the proportion of unemployed foreign-born individuals, especially among foreign-born women. Overall, this indicates a positive development for foreign-born individuals,” says Michella Szukis, statistician at the Labor Force Surveys at Statistics Sweden.

Labor force The number of individuals in the labor force aged 15-74 increased by 100,000 to 5,625,000 during the first quarter of 2023, non-seasonally adjusted. The number of women in the labor force was 2,672,000, an increase of 66,000, and the number of men was 2,953,000, an increase of 34,000. The relative labor force participation rate increased by 0.9 percentage points to 74.4 percent. For women, labor force participation was 71.9 percent, an increase of 1.4 percentage points, and for men, it was 76.8 percent.

Seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number and proportion of individuals in the labor force, compared to the previous quarter. The number of individuals in the labor force during the first quarter of 2023 was 5,672,000, which corresponds to 75.0 percent of the population.

Employment During the first quarter of 2023, the number of employed individuals aged 15-74 was 5,187,000, non-seasonally adjusted, an increase of 111,000 compared to the first quarter of 2022. This corresponds to an employment rate of 68.6 percent, an increase of 1.1 percentage points. The number of employed women was 2,460,000, an increase of 80,000, and the number of employed men was 2,727,000. The employment rate for women was 66.2 percent, an increase of 1.8 percentage points, and for men, the employment rate was 70.9 percent. The number of employed youth aged 15-24 was 487,000, which corresponds to an increase of 33,000. The employment rate for youth aged 15-24 was 41.3 percent, an increase of 1.9 percentage points.

Seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number and proportion of employed individuals compared to the previous quarter. The number of employed individuals during the first quarter of 2023 was 5,257,000, which corresponds to an employment rate of 69.5 percent.

Employees During the first quarter of 2023, the number of employees was 4,671,000, non-seasonally adjusted, an increase of 110,000 compared to the same quarter the previous year. The number of female employees increased by 79,000 to 2,312,000, and the number of male employees was 2,359,000
