Norway’s Electricity Generation: Hydro Power Dominates with 88.7% Share in April 2023

The latest data from the Norwegian Energy Directorate highlights the continued dominance of hydro power in the country’s electricity production, accounting for 88.7% of total generation in April 2023. The figures reflect Norway’s commitment to renewable energy sources and its reliance on its abundant hydroelectric resources.

According to the report, the total production of power in April 2023 reached 12,003 GWh (gigawatt-hours), representing a 7.7% increase compared to the same period last year. Among the different energy sources, hydro power played a significant role, contributing 10,649 GWh or 88.7% of the total electricity generation. This demonstrates the country’s strong emphasis on harnessing its vast hydropower potential.

While hydro power remains the primary source of electricity in Norway, other renewable sources also made notable contributions. Wind power accounted for 9.3% of total electricity generation in April 2023, producing 1,120 GWh. Meanwhile, thermal power, which includes fossil fuel-based generation, contributed 2.0% with 234 GWh.

On the consumption side, net electricity consumption in April 2023 reached 10,095 GWh, showing a slight decrease of 2.1% compared to the same period last year. It is important to note that consumption figures vary across different sectors. The consumption in the extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas increased by 18.6% to 771 GWh, reflecting the energy requirements of these industries. However, consumption in power-intensive manufacturing witnessed an 8.3% decrease, totaling 2,901 GWh. Consumption in other sectors, excluding petroleum extraction and power-intensive manufacturing, reached 6,423 GWh, representing a slight decrease of 1.2%.

The data signifies Norway’s progress in transitioning to a greener energy system, with a strong reliance on renewable sources like hydro and wind power. The country’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices is evident in the significant share of renewable energy in its electricity production.

The next update on Norway’s electricity generation is scheduled for 30 May 2023. As Norway continues to prioritize renewable energy, further advancements in technology and infrastructure are expected to contribute to the country’s sustainable energy goals.
