Defense Secretary Austin Stresses Increased Funding, Collaboration, and Timely Budget for Successful Competition with China

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy to outpace the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and maintain a competitive edge. The Department of Defense is requesting a 40% higher budget for the Pacific Deterrence Initiative (PDI) to bolster force posture in the Pacific and develop innovative operational concepts. Collaboration with the State Department and the Commerce Department is crucial to prevent conflicts, protect trade lanes, and advance technological advantages. Strengthening alliances in the Indo-Pacific and enhancing security cooperation with countries like Japan, Australia, South Korea, India, and others are vital for successful competition. Austin urged Congress to pass an on-time budget, as delays hinder defense efforts, affecting contracts, shipbuilding projects, and the availability of critical munitions.
