Analysis Reveals Voting Trends in Finnish Parliamentary Elections 2023: Highest Turnout Among Elderly Voters

In the recently concluded Parliamentary elections held on 5th April 2023, Statistics Finland has released data that sheds light on the background factors of voters. The analysis examines various demographic and socio-economic factors, providing valuable insights into voter behavior.

According to the data, voter turnout was highest among individuals aged 65 to 72, with over 79% of this age group casting their votes. Additionally, advance voting was most common among individuals slightly over 70 years old. The review also revealed that women voted more actively than men, except for the over 70 age group.

The analysis further examined the background factors of persons entitled to vote. It found that voting turnout was higher for women across all age groups, except for those aged at least 70. The difference in voting turnout between genders was most significant among younger voters, with women showing a higher percentage compared to men.

Income level was found to be closely tied to voting patterns. Higher income brackets saw a higher voting percentage, with over 80% turnout in the highest income quintile. In contrast, the lowest income quintile had a voting turnout of under 40%. However, income level had minimal impact on advance voting, which was most common among the lowest income quintile.

Education also played a significant role in voting behavior. Individuals with at least a master’s degree or higher education level had the highest voting turnout, surpassing 90%. Conversely, those with only basic level education had the lowest voting turnout, under 55%. Women had a slightly higher voting turnout compared to men in the group with upper secondary education.

The analysis also explored voting patterns based on the main type of activity. Employed individuals had the highest voting turnout among all persons entitled to vote, followed closely by pensioners. Other groups, such as the unemployed and inactive population, exhibited lower voting turnout.

The data analyzed is based on the Ministry of Justice’s voting register and votes cast register, along with Statistics Finland’s individual-level data. It is important to note that the numbers of voters based on data on votes cast may differ slightly from the official election results due to various factors such as procedural errors or recording errors.

These findings provide valuable insights into the voting behavior and preferences of different demographic groups, highlighting the importance of understanding voter demographics for political campaigns and policy-making.
