Belgian farmers are paying an average annual rent of €329 per hectare for agricultural land, according to recent findings. Rent refers to the amount tenants pay to landowners each year for the use of their land for agricultural purposes.
In 2022, Belgian farmers paid an average annual rent of €329/ha for arable land and €287/ha for grassland. Over the past decade, rent for arable land has increased by 32.7%, while grassland rent has seen a 20.1% increase.
When examining specific regions, arable land in Flanders is rented for an average of €424/ha, while in Wallonia, the average stands at €252/ha. Grassland rents are slightly lower, with Flanders averaging at €354/ha and Wallonia at €234/ha.
At the provincial level, West Flanders is the most expensive, with average arable land rent at €486/ha and grassland rent at €440/ha. This is more than double the amount paid in Luxembourg Province, where arable land and grassland rents are €196/ha and €178/ha, respectively.
On the agricultural region level, Dunes-Polders ranks as the costliest, with average arable land rent at €471/ha and grassland rent at €428/ha. Famenne, on the other hand, emerges as the most affordable, with arable land rent averaging at €163/ha and grassland rent at €144/ha.
