Increase in Number of Hours Worked in Switzerland in 2022

According to the latest findings from the Swiss Labour Force Survey and its derivative statistics, Switzerland witnessed a notable increase in the number of hours worked in 2022. The data, released by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), reveals a positive trend in the country’s labor market.

In 2022, a total of 7.922 billion hours were worked in Switzerland, representing a significant 1.3% increase compared to the previous year. This growth indicates a recovery from the impact of the pandemic, with the country returning to its pre-pandemic level of productivity.

Furthermore, the report highlights an interesting trend in the actual weekly working hours of full-time employees over the past few years. Between 2017 and 2022, the average weekly working hours for full-time employees decreased by 59 minutes, reaching a total of 39 hours and 59 minutes. This finding suggests a slight shift towards a shorter working week in Switzerland.

The increase in the number of hours worked and the gradual reduction in weekly working hours demonstrate the evolving dynamics of the Swiss labor market. As the country adapts to changing work patterns and strives to strike a balance between productivity and employee well-being, these statistics provide valuable insights into the trends shaping Switzerland’s workforce.

The Federal Statistical Office will continue to monitor and analyze labor market data to gain a comprehensive understanding of Switzerland’s evolving work landscape and its implications for the economy and society.
