Decrease in Tourist Numbers Observed in Lithuania’s Accommodation Sector

The first quarter of 2023 showed a decline in the number of tourists accommodated in Lithuania’s accommodation establishments compared to the same period in 2022, according to the latest data released by the National Statistical Office. A total of 586,700 tourists were accommodated during this period, reflecting a decrease of 2.8%. While the number of foreign tourists saw a significant increase of 27.1% and reached 198,500, the number of residents from Lithuania decreased by 13.2%, totaling 388,200.

The statistics for January 2023 revealed a positive growth of 4.1% in the number of tourists accommodated in the country’s accommodation establishments. However, the trend shifted in February and March, with a decline of 4.1% and 7.3% respectively compared to the corresponding months in 2022.

During the first quarter of 2023, the total number of overnight stays amounted to 1,220,100, which is 2.6% less than the previous year. On average, guests stayed for 2.1 nights in the accommodation establishments.

Breaking down the data by accommodation types, hotels, guest houses, and motels received 444,600 tourists during the first quarter of 2023, representing a 2.3% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. The number of foreign tourists in these establishments rose by 1.3 times, totaling 175,600.

The report also revealed that the number of rooms in hotels, guest houses, and motels increased to 16,500 during the first quarter of 2023, compared to 16,200 in the same period of the previous year. The number of beds also saw a slight increase to 36,100 from 35,300.

Moreover, there was a notable improvement in room and bed occupancy rates compared to the first quarter of 2022. Room occupancy rates increased by 9.8 percentage points, while bed occupancy rates increased by 2.7 percentage points.

Among the foreign tourists staying in hotels, guest houses, and motels, the majority hailed from Belarus, accounting for 22,600 visitors or 12.9% of all foreign tourists. Tourists from neighboring countries such as Belarus, Latvia, Poland, and Russia accounted for 65,500 visitors, which constituted 37.3% of all foreigners accommodated. Furthermore, the number of tourists from EU countries (excluding the United Kingdom) increased by 1.3 times compared to the first quarter of 2022, totaling 101,300.
