Denmark Conducts Naval Exercise in the Baltic Sea with Allies – BALTOPS 2023

Denmark, along with 19 other countries, is set to participate in the major exercise BALTOPS in the Baltic Sea over the next couple of weeks. With a contingent of 6,000 personnel, 50 ships, and approximately 60 aircraft, Denmark aims to enhance cooperation with NATO member states and partner nations.

The exercise, an annual event of great significance, aims to strengthen flexibility and collaborative capabilities among participating countries and facilitate the effective utilization of shared resources. Its purpose is to ensure that forces are trained and prepared to operate together and respond to any security threats in the Baltic Sea region.

During BALTOPS, a series of combined tactical maneuvers and scenarios will be conducted to enhance the participating nations’ ability to collaborate. Over 6,000 crew members from allied nations and one partner nation, along with personnel from land, air, and naval forces, will engage in exercises related to air defense, maritime blockade, anti-submarine warfare, and amphibious operations within a joint operational environment. While the scenario is simulated, the training and activities conducted are highly relevant, contributing to the resilience and strength of the NATO alliance.

“For the Danish Navy, BALTOPS provides a unique opportunity to conduct operations in multiple domains – air, surface, and underwater – simultaneously and in collaboration with our allied nations. This ensures that Denmark, along with our allies, remains prepared to defend NATO countries in the Baltic Sea region, ensuring stability and peace. Furthermore, the Navy is training its ability to lead an international naval force through its command staff,” stated Vice Admiral Carsten Fjord-Larsen, Deputy Commander of the Danish Naval Command.

Another crucial aspect of Denmark’s participation is the inclusion of the flagship frigate, Peter Willemoes, which will lead a force of approximately 10 warships throughout the exercise. Vice Admiral Carsten Fjord-Larsen will oversee the naval force and its command staff, operating from the frigate.

Additionally, Denmark will contribute its Mine Counter Measures (MCM) forces to the exercise, which will be assigned to another naval force led by the United States.

While the BALTOPS exercise was planned well in advance, the current security situation has emphasized the necessity of a strong and cohesive alliance, underscoring the importance of this exercise. While there is currently no heightened military threat to Denmark, the Baltic Sea’s strategic location makes it an area of interest for NATO.

BALTOPS is the most significant annual exercise in the Baltic Sea region. Finland, a fully integrated NATO member, is participating this year, having previously been involved as a partner nation. This year marks the 52nd edition of the exercise series, which commenced in 1971. BALTOPS 23 will commence in Tallinn, Estonia, and will take place throughout the Baltic Sea, including the airspace and waters of participating nations. The exercise will conclude in Kiel, Germany.
