Denmark’s Sports Industry Shows Resilience Despite Challenging Times

The sports industry in Denmark has demonstrated resilience in the face of challenging circumstances, with key economic figures reflecting its stability and potential for growth, according to the latest available data. The statistics from 2019 to 2021 provide insights into the industry’s turnover, export and import values, wage and salary costs, as well as employment figures.

The total turnover of the sports industry in Denmark reached DKK 7,052 million in 2021, showcasing a steady recovery from the decline experienced in 2020. Despite the disruptions caused by the pandemic, the industry’s export value witnessed significant growth, reaching DKK 881 million in 2021, compared to DKK 649 million in the previous year. Import figures also saw a slight increase, reaching DKK 319 million in 2021.

Wage and salary costs remained stable throughout the three-year period, totaling DKK 6,720 million in 2021. This consistency reflects the industry’s commitment to supporting its workforce. The number of jobs in the sports industry also experienced a positive trend, with 40,158 individuals employed by the end of November 2021, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Taking a closer look at specific sectors within the sports industry, the operation of sports activities (931100) accounted for a turnover of DKK 1,565 million in 2021. Sport clubs (931200) reported a turnover of DKK 3,362 million, and fitness facilities (931300) reached DKK 874 million in turnover. Other sports activities (931900) generated a turnover of DKK 1,251 million. These figures highlight the diverse and thriving nature of the sports industry in Denmark.

Despite the challenges faced, the industry’s export values in various sectors have demonstrated growth potential. Sport clubs reported an export value of DKK 657 million in 2021, followed by fitness facilities with DKK 8 million, and other sports activities with DKK 207 million.

The data emphasizes the importance of the sports industry in Denmark, not only as a source of entertainment and physical well-being but also as a significant contributor to the country’s economy.
