The Foreign Minister of Finland, Pekka Haavisto, and the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, have signed a joint statement on cooperation in 6G technology between Finland and the United States. The signing ceremony took place in Helsinki, highlighting the shared commitment to intensify collaboration in key research and development areas of 6G and enhance interaction between Finnish and American stakeholders.
6G technology represents a significant advancement compared to previous generations of wireless mobile technology. The industry’s progress relies on the interplay between scientific research, standardization, and commercialization.
“In the development of 6G, it is essential to achieve common values and goals of sustainable development, both bilaterally and multilaterally. It is excellent that Finland and the United States, as partner countries, can work together towards these objectives,” stated Foreign Minister Haavisto.
Finland has been at the forefront of 6G development, launching a comprehensive 6G research program back in 2018. The country’s expertise in 6G presents commercial and political opportunities, necessitating international cooperation to fully capitalize on this potential.
“6G is at the core of Finland’s future success, and collaboration with the United States strengthens our technological advantage. I am pleased about the significant prospects that now open up for research, development, and commercialization. Western democracies must also demonstrate coherence in international forums when deciding on standards and frequencies,” expressed Communications Minister Timo Harakka.
The signing of the joint statement is part of Secretary Blinken’s program in Finland. The technological collaboration between Finland and the United States has intensified in recent years. The countries’ agreement on scientific and technical cooperation provides a solid foundation for further development. Finland considers it important for discussions on technological cooperation between the European Union and the United States to continue, including within the framework of the EU-United States Trade and Technology Council (TTC).
The joint statement was prepared in close collaboration by the Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, Ministry of Education and Culture, and Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
