In April 2023, there was a positive recovery in manufacturing output in France, with a growth of 0.7%. This improvement was reflected in both the manufacturing industry and the overall industrial sector, which experienced an increase of 0.8% after a previous decline of 1.1%.
During the month of April, output witnessed an upward trend in most industries. The mining and quarrying, energy, and water supply sector saw a significant growth of 1.8% following a decline of 1.2%. The manufacture of transport equipment also experienced an upturn, with a 2.0% increase compared to a slight decline of 0.1% previously. Within the transport equipment category, the production of “other transport equipment” notably rose by 4.7% after a decrease of 0.7%. However, the manufacturing of motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers witnessed a decline of 1.8% following a previous growth of 0.8%.
Other sectors that contributed to the recovery in output were the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods, which saw a growth of 1.4% after a decline of 1.2%, and the “other manufacturing” industries, which experienced a slight increase of 0.3% after a decrease of 0.9%. Notably, the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum experienced a substantial rebound of 23.6% after a significant decline of 45.2% in the previous month. This recovery was attributed to the strikes in refineries being less significant in April compared to March. On the other hand, the manufacture of food products and beverages continued to decline, with a decrease of 0.3% following a previous decline of 0.4%.
These positive changes in manufacturing output indicate a recovery in industrial production in France during April 2023.
