Death Figures in Germany for May 2023 Exceed Median of Previous Years by 4%

According to extrapolated data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), a total of 81,114 individuals passed away in Germany during May 2023. This figure surpasses the median of the years 2019 to 2022 for the same month by 4%, equivalent to 2,758 more cases. Notably, the occurrence of flu waves coincided with significantly higher death figures in January and March 2023 compared to the corresponding periods in previous years. In February and April, the number of deaths approached or slightly exceeded the median values in some instances.

The data ranges from 27 June 2022 to 19 June 2023 and portrays the dynamic nature of mortality patterns during this period. Weekly death figures experienced significant fluctuations, with a range between 91 and 28,521 cases, reflecting the diverse factors influencing mortality rates in Germany.
