France witnessed a notable increase in the prices of frequently purchased goods sold in hyper and supermarkets in May 2023. According to the latest report by INSEE, these prices rose by 14.6% compared to the same month last year, marking a slight slowdown after seventeen consecutive months of acceleration.
The data revealed that food prices in hyper and supermarkets experienced a deceleration, with a month-on-month increase of 0.8% in May, following a 1.5% rise in April. Year on year, food prices rose by 15.1%, displaying a slight slowdown from the previous month’s 15.8% increase.
Within this category, meat prices saw a month-on-month increase of 0.6% in May, compared to a 1.1% rise in April. However, there was a significant deceleration in meat prices on a year-on-year basis, with an increase of 14.3%, down from 16.1% in April.
Beverage prices in hyper and supermarkets rose by 0.8% over the month, following a 1.4% increase in April. On a year-on-year basis, beverage prices slightly accelerated, reaching 10.9% in May, up from 10.8% in April.
The prices of “other food products” experienced a 0.8% month-on-month increase in May, compared to a 1.7% rise in April. However, on a year-on-year basis, there was a slowdown in the prices of these products, with an increase of 17.1%, down from 17.6% in April.
Furthermore, the prices of cleaning and personal care products in hyper and supermarkets increased by 0.2% compared to the previous month, following a 0.7% rise in April. Year on year, these prices increased by 11.7%, slightly higher than the 11.4% growth observed in April.
Overall, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets experienced a 14.6% year-on-year increase in May 2023, signifying a slight deceleration in comparison to the previous month’s 15.1% rise. These price trends highlight the ongoing challenges faced by consumers in managing their household expenses in France.
