Denmark and Allied Nations Conduct Joint Naval Exercises in the Baltic Sea

Copenhagen, Denmark – Denmark, along with 18 other NATO countries and partner nation Sweden, recently concluded a series of extensive naval exercises in the Baltic Sea. The annual exercise known as BALTOPS aimed to enhance maritime capabilities and demonstrate the alliance’s commitment to regional security.

The month-long exercise, which commenced in early June, saw the participation of Denmark’s Naval Command’s Command Staff stationed aboard the frigate Peter Willemoes. Additionally, Danish mine clearance forces, the Naval Diving Service, and various authorities from the island of Bornholm were actively involved in the maneuvers.

Rear Admiral Carsten Fjord-Larsen, Deputy Commander of the Naval Command, expressed satisfaction with the exercise, stating, “It has been an excellent opportunity for us to train all aspects of naval operations while strengthening our collaboration with allied and partner nations.” Rear Admiral Fjord-Larsen led a fleet of ten ships, with the frigate Peter Willemoes serving as the fleet’s flagship.

Significantly, Finland participated as a full member of NATO for the first time during this year’s BALTOPS exercise. The Finnish vessel Hämeenaa joined the Danish-led fleet, marking a crucial step in integrating Finnish ships into NATO forces. Rear Admiral Fjord-Larsen highlighted the importance of this development, stating, “Finland has always been an essential partner in the Baltic Sea, and their inclusion in the NATO family is a significant milestone.”

One notable aspect of the exercise was the mid-exercise drill conducted in collaboration with the United States. The frigate Peter Willemoes docked at Rønne on Bornholm Island for a simulated reload of SM-2 air defense missiles. This exercise showcased the logistical capabilities of NATO forces, emphasizing their ability to resupply and maintain operational readiness at any location and time.

BALTOPS exercises, with a history spanning over 50 years, serve as a crucial platform to exhibit NATO’s unwavering commitment to Baltic Sea security. Against the backdrop of the current security landscape, the exercises conveyed a clear message regarding NATO’s determination and capability to safeguard the region. Rear Admiral Fjord-Larsen emphasized, “BALTOPS sends a clear and unequivocal message about NATO’s commitment to ensuring security in the Baltic Sea region. Our allies and partners in the region have once again witnessed the shared responsibility we hold in addressing their security concerns, which we take very seriously.”

The successful completion of BALTOPS underlines the readiness and cooperation among NATO member nations and serves as a testament to the alliance’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the Baltic Sea region.
