Rising Trend: More than 1 in 10 Addresses in England and Wales Used as Holiday Homes, Reveals Census 2021 Data

More than 1 in 10 addresses in certain areas of England and Wales are being used as holiday homes, according to an analysis of Census 2021 data. The study found that around 70,000 second addresses are being used as holiday homes, with over 200,000 people visiting them. Holiday homes make up 4.1% of all second addresses and are predominantly concentrated in coastal areas, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and national parks such as the Lake District, Dartmoor, and Snowdonia. Cornwall has the highest number of holiday homes, with 6,080 properties and 14,230 holiday home users. The South West of England has the highest concentration of holiday homes compared to other regions, followed by Wales. The study also revealed that holidaying within the UK has become more common, with almost half of holiday home users traveling domestically, up from 42.3% in the 2011 Census. The UK and Welsh governments have recently introduced new laws to regulate second home ownership, including stricter requirements for holiday lets and increased council tax premiums for second homes.
