Norway’s Salmon Exports Experience Price Fluctuations and Increased Volume

The export market for Norwegian salmon has witnessed notable developments in recent weeks, as reflected in the latest figures released by industry sources. The export price of fresh salmon, measured in Norwegian Krone (NOK) per kilo, experienced some fluctuations during Week 24 of 2023. Meanwhile, the volume of salmon exports, both fresh/chilled and frozen, also exhibited interesting trends.

According to the data, the export price of fresh or chilled salmon stood at NOK 100.75 per kilo during Week 24, representing a decrease of 8.5% compared to the previous week. However, when compared to the same week in the previous year, the price showed a slight increase of 2.4%.

On the other hand, frozen salmon experienced a different trajectory. During Week 24, the export price of frozen salmon reached NOK 98.91 per kilo, marking a significant increase of 5.2% compared to the previous week. Looking at the year-on-year comparison, the price of frozen salmon rose by a noteworthy 20.5%.

In terms of volume, the export figures for fresh or chilled salmon amounted to 17,359 tonnes during Week 24. This represents a decrease of 5.1% compared to the previous week. However, when compared to the same week in the previous year, the volume exhibited a growth rate of 13.3%.

Similarly, the export volume of frozen salmon displayed an interesting trend. During Week 24, 337 tonnes of frozen salmon were exported, reflecting a substantial increase of 29.6% compared to the previous week. In terms of the year-on-year comparison, the volume of frozen salmon exports grew by 0.6%.

These figures provide insights into the dynamic nature of Norway’s salmon export market, with both price fluctuations and volume changes influencing the industry. The export of Norwegian salmon remains a significant component of the country’s economy, and these developments are closely monitored by industry stakeholders and market observers.

It is important to note that the commodity numbers for fresh salmon are 03.02.1411 and 03.02.1419, while frozen salmon is classified under 03.03.1311 and 03.03.1319.
