In the latest data released by the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS), the implied deflator for various sectors of the retail industry showed a mixed performance in the month-on-previous-month percentage change. AGG 7, representing household goods stores, experienced a slight decline of 0.2%.

The year-on-year percentage change in the implied deflator also presented a mixed picture. AGG 1 (predominantly food stores) showed a positive trend with a 2% increase compared to the same period last year. However, AGG 12 (predominantly non-food stores) witnessed a 1.5% decrease. AGG 13, representing other stores, showed a 0.3% increase compared to the previous year.

In addition to the implied deflator, the Retail Sales Index (RSI) provided insights into the performance of specific retail sectors. Specialist food stores (val nsa) in all business categories saw a positive trend with an overall increase of 3% compared to the previous year. Alcoholic drinks, beverages, and tobacco (val nsa) also experienced growth, with a 2% increase. Other specialised stores NEC (val nsa) showed a moderate increase of 1%.

Looking at the year-to-date index, specialist food stores (all business) showed a positive trend with an increase of 5%. Alcoholic drinks, beverages, and tobacco (all business) also experienced growth, with a 3% increase. Other specialised stores NES (all business) showed a slight increase of 1%.

Overall, the retail sector in the UK demonstrated a mixed performance in various categories, with some sectors experiencing growth while others faced declines. The data suggests a complex and evolving landscape for the retail industry, reflecting changing consumer preferences and market dynamics.
