On June 29, 2023, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) stated that there have been no alterations to the strategic posture between Russia and the United States following the recent comments made by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of the Russian private military company known as the Wagner Group. In a social media video, Prigozhin’s remarks appeared to contradict the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder addressed the matter during a briefing, reiterating that the situation remains an internal one concerning Russia and does not directly involve the United States. He emphasized that the U.S.’s primary concern has been the continued stability of Russia’s nuclear arsenal. Ryder assured that, as of the current moment, there have been no indications of any strategic instability in Russia, including any concerns related to their nuclear forces. Hence, the U.S. has not found it necessary to make any changes to its own force posture.
While the DOD will continue to monitor the situation, its main focus will remain on supporting Ukraine in its efforts to defend its sovereignty against the ongoing Russian invasion.
In other news, the United States and the Department of Defense will be commemorating the 50th anniversary of the all-volunteer force, which was established on July 1, 1973. Unlike previous military systems that relied on drafts, the all-volunteer force has successfully recruited and retained dedicated individuals from diverse backgrounds and regions across the country. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III is scheduled to mark the occasion with a public statement and a visit to Fort Meade, Maryland. During the visit, he will have the honor of swearing in approximately 100 new recruits into the armed forces, acknowledging their voluntary commitment to serving the nation.
