The number of families with access to one or more cars – personal, leased, commercial, or company vehicles – has increased by a total of 251,200 since 2013. As of today, 62.0% of families in Denmark own a car, compared to 59.2% in 2013 and 62.6% just a year ago. While the number of families with one car has increased by 117,400 or 9.2% since 2013, the number of families with two or more cars has risen by 133,800 or 31.1%. However, there is a significant difference in car ownership among different municipalities.
In the metropolitan area and the largest cities, fewer than 60% of families have a car. For instance, in Copenhagen Municipality, it is less than 30%, while in Aarhus, it is less than 50%. On the other hand, in several municipalities around the major cities, such as Rebild and Favrskov, eight out of ten families own a car.
Families with High Car Ownership
Families with high car ownership share certain characteristics (as of January 1):
• They are two-parent families with children, with 89% owning a car in 2023. • They consist of top executives, with 89% of these families having a car in 2022. • They have the highest disposable income, with 87% of families in the highest decile group, meaning the top 10% with the most disposable income, owning a car in 2022. • They reside in detached houses, with 85% of these families owning a car in 2022. • They live in small towns with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants or in rural areas, with 77-81% owning a car in 2023.
Families with Low Car Ownership
Similarly, families with low car ownership exhibit certain characteristics (as of January 1):
• They have the lowest disposable income, with only 14% of families in the lowest decile group, meaning the bottom 10% with the least disposable income, owning a car in 2022. • They consist of early retirees, with 38% of these families owning a car in 2022. • They reside in apartment buildings, with 41% of these families owning a car in 2022. • They are single individuals without children, with 41% owning a car in 2023. • They live in the metropolitan area or in cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, with 42-48% owning a car in 2023.
Significant Increase in the Proportion of Families with Multiple Cars
At the beginning of the year, the number of families with access to multiple cars had increased to 564,100, compared to 430,300 families ten years ago. This translates to 17.8% of all families having multiple cars, compared to 14.9% a decade ago. Among the four municipalities in Jutland – Rebild, Hedensted, Skanderborg, and Favrskov – over 31% of families own two or more cars, and overall, the Jutland region has experienced the most significant growth in the proportion of families with multiple cars.
