EU President von der Leyen Addresses Press Conference with Spanish Prime Minister Sánchez

During a joint press conference held at the Royal Collections Gallery in Spain, EU President von der Leyen expressed gratitude for the cultural heritage on display and discussed crucial topics on the European legislative agenda for the next six months.

Ukraine took center stage in the discussions, as Spain assumed the Council Presidency at a critical moment following Russia’s invasion. President von der Leyen emphasized the need for unwavering support for Ukraine, highlighting the 500 days of suffering endured by its people. To aid the country, the EU has proposed a new Facility for Ukraine, totaling EUR 50 billion until 2027, to provide financial assistance and support reform efforts. The Spanish government’s backing on the MFF revision by year-end was sought.

Regarding security measures, the EU continues to impose sanctions on Russia while supplying military equipment to Ukraine. The urgency to secure a swift political agreement on the Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP) was stressed to ensure the delivery of ammunition to Ukraine and replenishment of EU stocks. Furthermore, the International Centre for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression in The Hague was praised for documenting Russia’s war crimes for accountability.

President von der Leyen urged a focus on enhancing the competitiveness of Europe’s industry and economy, particularly in innovation. The Green Deal Industrial Plan, Critical Raw Materials Act, and Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform were mentioned as vital proposals. Fast-tracking the Artificial Intelligence Act and reforming the EU’s fiscal rules were also emphasized, with Spain’s support sought for successful conclusion.

Economic security, a growing concern, requires robust partnerships worldwide. The EU-CELAC Summit in mid-July was cited as an opportunity to advance trade agreements with Latin America and the Caribbean. The President hoped for progress on the EU-MERCOSUR, Mexico, and Chile agreements during Spain’s Presidency.

On the issue of migration, comprehensive partnerships investing in the economic stability of origin and transit countries were deemed crucial. The EU proposed an increase of EUR 15 billion, part of the MFF review, to address migration challenges.

With the Spanish Presidency in place, President von der Leyen expressed confidence in Spain’s dedication, leadership, and deep European spirit to address these critical matters during the next six months.
