President von der Leyen and UN Secretary-General Discuss Global Challenges Ahead of European Commission-United Nations Retreat

President Ursula von der Leyen and UN Secretary-General António Guterres held a press statement ahead of the European Commission-United Nations Retreat, highlighting the importance of international cooperation to address global challenges. They discussed key topics including Ukraine, climate change, the digital transition, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

President von der Leyen emphasized the need for cooperation in supporting Ukraine and those affected by Russia’s aggression. She highlighted the solidarity lanes established between the European Union and Ukraine, which have facilitated the transportation of 45 million tonnes of grain and agri-food products to the rest of the world. President von der Leyen thanked Secretary-General Guterres for his efforts in prolonging the Black Sea Grain Initiative, stressing the responsibility of Russia to support it to prevent global food insecurity.

The discussion also focused on upholding the UN Charter and international law in the context of Russia’s war. President von der Leyen expressed support for President Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula, based on UN resolutions, and emphasized the importance of gathering international support for it.

Climate change and preparations for COP28 were another significant topic. The European Union highlighted its commitment to the clean energy transition and proposed the definition of global targets on renewables and energy efficiency. Climate finance, particularly for developing economies and emerging markets, was identified as a crucial aspect that requires public and private sector involvement. Carbon pricing was also discussed as a potential solution.

The increasing power of artificial intelligence and its impact on societies globally was addressed, acknowledging the need to harness its potential while remaining vigilant about its potential negative effects, such as information manipulation and foreign interferences.

Lastly, the leaders focused on re-energizing global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The European Union highlighted its investment program, Global Gateway, which prioritizes openness and good governance. They stressed the importance of public and private sector financing and the need to address the increasing debt vulnerabilities of developing countries.

The European Commission-United Nations Retreat will continue with in-depth discussions on these topics and aims to foster international cooperation in addressing global challenges.
