Norway’s Electricity Production Dominated by Hydropower in June 2023

According to the latest data released on July 14, 2023, hydropower accounted for 92.2% of Norway’s total electricity production in June 2023. The figures reflect the country’s continued reliance on renewable energy sources, particularly hydropower, as a major contributor to its electricity generation.

The total production of electric power in June 2023 reached 11,333 GWh, marking a slight decrease of 1.3% compared to the same period in the previous year. Hydropower production amounted to 10,444 GWh, showing a marginal decline of 0.9%. While wind power contributed 6.0% to the overall production with 679 GWh, thermal power production accounted for 1.9% at 210 GWh.

In terms of electricity consumption, Norway recorded a net consumption of 7,919 GWh, representing a decrease of 4.5% compared to June 2022. The consumption pattern varied across different sectors, with consumption in the extraction of crude oil and natural gas experiencing a significant drop of 14.4% at 583 GWh. The consumption in power-intensive industries also declined by 10.0% to 2,855 GWh. However, general supply consumption increased by 1.0% to 4,481 GWh.

These figures highlight Norway’s commitment to sustainable and renewable energy sources, with hydropower remaining the dominant force in the country’s electricity production. The data also reflects the ongoing efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and transition towards a greener and more environmentally friendly energy sector.
