EU mobilizes air and ground firefighting assistance to help Greece battle widespread wildfires. Four Canadair planes from France and Italy, along with three firefighting teams from Poland, Romania, and Slovakia, have been deployed, totaling 220 firefighters and 65 vehicles. This aid is in addition to pre-deployed ground firefighting teams from Romania, Bulgaria, and Malta already operating in Greece. The EU’s Civil Protection wildfire season preparedness plan is in action. Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, emphasizes the need for continued investment in prevention and raising wildfire risk awareness. The EU stands ready to provide further assistance if needed.
