Decline in Tourist Accommodation Stays in Spain, June 2023

According to the latest survey on non-hotel tourist accommodation, stays in these establishments have decreased by 3.0% compared to the same month in 2022. However, when looking at the cumulative stays since January, there is a growth of 9.1%, and they are 7.4% higher than the same period in 2019.

In particular, rural tourism data for June 2023 shows a total of 1,050,617 overnight stays, representing a slight increase of 0.89% compared to the previous year. However, the average length of stay has declined by 4.28%, with visitors spending approximately 2.42 days on average. The occupancy rate per room has also experienced a decrease of 2.24%, standing at 19.81%.

Despite the challenges, rural accommodation prices have seen a positive trend with an increase of 5.06% when compared to the previous year, reaching an index of 164.25.

These figures indicate a mixed scenario for Spain’s rural tourism sector, with a decrease in monthly stays but overall growth when considering the cumulative data since the beginning of the year. The tourism industry will be closely monitoring these trends to devise strategies for a sustainable recovery and to attract more visitors to the country’s rural destinations.
