8% Decrease in Maritime Transport in June 2023 for Finland

According to preliminary data from Statistics Finland, the total volume of foreign maritime transport in June 2023 was 7.8 million tonnes. This marked an 8% decrease compared to June 2022 in Finland’s foreign maritime transport. Export decreased by 1% and amounted to 3.8 million tonnes, while import decreased by 13% and was 4.0 million tonnes. In passenger transport, 1.4 million people were carried, which was 68% of the level before the coronavirus pandemic.

Most of the maritime transport in June 2023 comprised the transportation of unitized cargo. A total of 1.3 million tonnes of unitized cargo was transported. Of this, 0.6 million tonnes were imported and 0.6 million tonnes were exported. The next highest category was crude oil at 1.1 million tonnes, followed by oil products at 1.1 million tonnes.

Containerized and vehicular transport amounted to a total of 2.2 million tonnes or 28% of the total maritime transport volume. Vehicular transport carried 1.3 million tonnes of goods, and containerized transport carried 0.9 million tonnes.

Of the goods transported by vehicles, 0.7 million tonnes were transported by trucks and 0.5 million tonnes by trailers. In addition to the vehicles used for goods transport, 218,417 passenger cars and 3,290 buses were transported.

A total of 65,390 containers were transported, equivalent to 117,888 TEU units.

Passenger Transport Carried 1.4 Million People In June 2023, a total of 1.4 million people were transported in passenger transport. Between Finland and Estonia, 747,789 people traveled; between Finland and Sweden, 608,705 people traveled; and between Finland and Germany, 18,924 people traveled. Compared to June 2022, the number of passengers increased by 4%. However, compared to June 2019, there were only 68% of the passengers.

In June 2023, Finland received 29,634 passengers from foreign cruise ships, which is only 23% of the level before the coronavirus pandemic.
