China and Zambia Strengthen Bilateral Ties during President Hichilema’s Visit

On the afternoon of September 15, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met with the President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, who was on a state visit to China at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

During the meeting, Premier Li expressed that China and Zambia share a deep friendship rooted in tradition and a wide array of common interests. Despite the ever-changing international landscape, the political trust between the two nations continues to strengthen, and their practical cooperation is growing closer. This demonstrates a model of unity and cooperation among developing countries. President Xi Jinping and President Hichilema held talks, outlining a new blueprint and a new chapter for bilateral relations. China is willing to work with Zambia to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, enhance strategic coordination, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and advance the bilateral relationship to a higher level.

Premier Li pointed out that China and Zambia are good partners on the path of development. China is willing to work together with Zambia to combine the Belt and Road Initiative with the implementation of the nine major projects of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the outcomes of the China-Africa Leaders’ Dialogue, continuously enhance the strategic and sustainable nature of bilateral cooperation, expand cooperation in traditional fields such as mining and infrastructure construction, actively foster new growth areas in industrial and agricultural modernization, green development, and the digital economy. This aims to create a modernization path characterized by mutual benefit and mutual assistance among developing countries, and both sides should strengthen mutual understanding and support to safeguard the common interests of the two countries and developing nations as a whole.

President Hichilema expressed that Zambia and China enjoy all-weather friendship, and the bilateral relationship is as solid as a rock. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, China has embarked on a successful development path and achieved tremendous accomplishments. Zambia adheres to the One-China principle and is willing to deepen cooperation with China in various fields such as industry, agriculture, economic and trade, technology, and tourism to achieve sustainable development. Zambia opposes the “debt trap” narrative and economic decoupling and is eager to promote common development with China.

The meeting was attended by Wu Zhenglong, Governor of Jiangsu Province, and other officials from both sides.

President Hichilema’s visit is expected to further strengthen the diplomatic and economic ties between China and Zambia, benefiting both nations and contributing to regional and global cooperation.
