Boverket Assigned to Develop Support for Building Information Modeling (BIM)

The Swedish government has tasked Boverket with furthering the digitization of the community-building process by developing support for public entities regarding the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for buildings.

Infrastructure and Housing Minister Andreas Carlson expressed the government’s desire to encourage the real estate industry to streamline its operations. BIM can serve as a useful and cost-effective tool in the digitization of the community-building process. Although the assignment is aimed at public entities, the results will be applicable to private actors in the real estate sector as well.

BIM is a concept for managing information linked to three-dimensional digital models, including buildings. It is already in use today by state entities such as the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and players within the real estate sector.

The government has entrusted Boverket with the responsibility of developing support for public entities concerning the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for buildings. The assignment includes proposing the standards and guidelines that public entities should primarily use.

The government believes that there could be benefits for the public sector in coordinating the use of BIM at a national level, and the knowledge gained could be valuable for other actors in the construction industry. Increased use of BIM could contribute to cost savings and efficiency gains.

Boverket is expected to present the results of the assignment by February 29, 2024.
