Employment Trends in Italy: September 2023 Shows Job Growth and Reduced Inactivity

In September 2023, preliminary data reveals an increase in both employed and unemployed individuals in Italy, while the category of inactive individuals experiences a decline.

Key Highlights:

  • Rising Employment: The number of employed individuals rises by 0.2%, equivalent to 42 thousand units. This increase is the result of growth observed among men, permanent employees, self-employed individuals, those under 35, and those aged 50 and above. However, there is a decrease among women, temporary employees, and individuals aged between 35 and 49. The employment rate reaches 61.7%, marking a 0.1 percentage point increase.
  • Increase in Unemployment: The number of people actively seeking employment grows by 1.9%, totaling 35 thousand individuals. This increase primarily affects women and spans across all age groups. The overall unemployment rate reaches 7.4%, marking a 0.1 percentage point increase, while the youth unemployment rate stands at 21.9%, showing a 0.1 point decrease.
  • Decline in Inactivity: The number of inactive individuals between the ages of 15 and 64 decreases by 0.7%, totaling 92 thousand individuals. This decline impacts both men and women across all age groups. The inactivity rate drops to 33.2%, reflecting a 0.2 percentage point decrease.

Quarterly Comparison: When comparing the third quarter of 2023 with the second quarter, there is a 0.3% increase in the employment level, totaling 80 thousand employed individuals. This employment growth is associated with a decrease in the number of individuals actively seeking employment (-1.9%, equivalent to -36 thousand individuals) and a reduction in inactive individuals (-0.5%, equivalent to -63 thousand individuals).

Year-on-Year Comparison: In September 2023, the number of employed individuals surpasses that of September 2022 by 2.2% (+512 thousand units). This increase spans across men, women, and all age groups, except for individuals aged 35 to 49 due to negative demographic dynamics. The overall employment rate rises by 1.4 percentage points, also increasing in the 35-49 age group by 0.6 points.

Compared to September 2022, both the number of people actively seeking employment (-5.1%, equivalent to -101 thousand individuals) and the number of inactive individuals between the ages of 15 and 64 (-3.6%, equivalent to -459 thousand) decrease.
