Italian Businesses Show Strong Economic Rebound in 2021

In 2021, Italian industrial and service enterprises experienced a robust resurgence, reaching almost 4.4 million in number, reflecting a 2.5% increase compared to 2020.

Key Highlights:

  1. Substantial Growth: The combined value added by industrial and service enterprises surged to €898 billion, marking a notable 21.6% increase from the previous year. This recovery is particularly pronounced in the Construction sector (37.4%), Industry (20.5%), and Services (20.3%). The upswing is also significant when compared to 2019, boasting an 8.8% increase.
  2. Double-Digit Increases: Several key economic indicators witnessed double-digit growth. The gross operating surplus (Mol) soared by 33.9%, turnover increased by 22.4%, and labor costs rose by 11.8%. Comparing these figures to 2019, Mol increased by 16.5%, turnover by 8.5%, and labor costs by 2.4%.
  3. Group Performance: Businesses organized in groups accounted for 64.2% of the total turnover and 57.2% of the value added. These groups demonstrated a remarkable 21.4% growth in value added compared to 2020 and a solid 9.9% increase compared to 2019, effectively recovering from the downturn experienced in 2020 (-9.5%).
