Statistics Canada has published the annual data on international transactions in services, focusing on enterprise characteristics, employment size, and industries. The report covers the period from 2017 to 2021, providing insights into Canada’s economic interactions with various trade partners.

Key Highlights:

  • In 2021, Canada’s total exports (receipts) for all enterprise employment sizes and industries amounted to $113.32 billion.
  • The Information and Cultural Industries sector led in both exports and growth, reaching $22.97 billion in 2021, compared to $11.71 billion in 2017.
  • Finance and Insurance saw a substantial increase, growing from $13.07 billion in 2017 to $18.10 billion in 2021.
  • The Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services sector experienced notable growth, reaching $37.47 billion in 2021.

Enterprise Employment Size:

  1. All Enterprise Employment Sizes:
    • The total exports for all enterprise employment sizes and industries increased from $71.29 billion in 2017 to $113.32 billion in 2021.
    • The Manufacturing sector, with $7.70 billion in exports, and the Information and Cultural Industries sector, with $22.97 billion, were significant contributors.
  2. Unreported Employees:
    • Exports for unreported employees across all industries increased from $9.84 billion in 2017 to $7.87 billion in 2021.
    • The Information and Cultural Industries sector saw a significant decrease from $964 million in 2017 to $290 million in 2021.
  3. Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (0 to 499 employees):
    • Exports for this category increased from $32.14 billion in 2017 to $53.13 billion in 2021.
    • The Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services sector showed substantial growth, reaching $21.36 billion in 2021.
  4. Large Enterprises (500 or more employees):
    • Exports for large enterprises increased from $29.32 billion in 2017 to $52.32 billion in 2021.
    • The Information and Cultural Industries sector led in exports, reaching $10.18 billion in 2021.
