Spain’s Business Landscape in 2021: A Snapshot

New data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) unveils the vibrancy and shifts in Spain’s business realm for the year 2021.

In the past year, Spain boasted 3,416,248 active companies, witnessing a net growth of 1.9%. Notably, 314,033 new businesses emerged, while 250,182 closed their doors.

Breaking down the sectors, the construction industry demonstrated resilience with a 9.7% birth rate and a 7.2% death rate among its 407,702 companies. The overall landscape saw birth and death rates at 9.2% and 7.3%, respectively.

A noteworthy statistic is the survival rate, with 45.4% of companies born in 2016 standing strong after five years of operation.

The stock of companies, presented in thousands, reflects a consistent upward trend, reaching 3,760,000 in 2021 compared to 3,380,000 in 2017.

These insights into Spain’s business dynamics provide valuable cues for policymakers and entrepreneurs navigating the ever-evolving economic terrain.
