Press Release: Building Permits in Q3 2023 in Italy

In the third quarter of 2023, based on permits in the residential sector, a stability in the number of housing units is estimated, along with a slight increase in the habitable useful surface area (+0.3%) compared to the previous quarter.

On the other hand, the non-residential construction sector records a significant decline (-13.9%) compared to the second quarter of 2023.

Key Figures:

  • In the third quarter of 2023, the estimated number of housing units for new residential buildings, adjusted for seasonality, is around 13,606 units, with a habitable useful surface area just above 1.19 million square meters. The non-residential surface area is approximately 2.37 million square meters.
  • Overall, the residential sector shows a slight decline in the number of housing units (-0.9%) compared to the previous quarter, while the habitable useful surface area grows by a modest 0.4%.
  • Regarding non-residential buildings, the surface area in the third quarter of the year decreases by 6.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the third quarter of 2023, in terms of conjunctural analysis, the number of housing units remains stable, while the habitable useful surface area records a modest positive change. Conversely, the non-residential surface area experiences a decrease after two quarters of growth.

From a trend perspective, in the third quarter of the year, the number of housing units shows a decline, albeit mitigated, for the fifth consecutive quarter. The non-residential sector also experiences a downturn compared to the third quarter of 2022.
