Deltares, KNMI, Rijkswaterstaat secure €14.5m for new modeling lab

Deltares, KNMI and Rijkswaterstaat have secured €14.5 million under the Facilities for Applied Research scheme to build the Intelligent Modeling Lab for Weather, Climate and Water (iML‑WKW). The three partners will create an open, future‑proof digital facility that will run from 1 December 2025 to 31 December 2029. The lab will support the development of next‑generation simulation models for meteorology, water management and climate adaptation. It will provide a testing and development environment for new computational techniques, including artificial intelligence, quantum algorithms and graphics processors, to accelerate and refine existing physics‑based models. The lab will also serve as an accessible ecosystem, involving universities, private companies and other government bodies. First applications are expected by the end of 2026.
