At the end of 2024, Statistics Finland reported 238,453 families in Finland with at least one child aged 0‑6, a decline of 24.2% since 1994. Compared with 2013, the number of such families fell by nearly 18 %. After a decrease until 2004, the count rose until 2013, gaining about 12,000 families, but has since dropped steadily, falling 51,000 since 2013. The largest change occurred in married‑couple families, whose share of all under‑7 families fell from 61 % in 2013 to 54 % in 2024, while unmarried‑couple families rose to 29 % and single‑parent families to 16 %. Same‑sex couples with under‑7 children comprised 0.4 % of all families in 2024. Regional variation was also observed, with the largest absolute numbers in Uusimaa.
