Total nonfarm job openings were unchanged at 7.2 million in August 2025. Nonfarm hires and separations each were 5.1 million. Quits 3.1 million, layoffs/discharges 1.7 million. Private sector had 6.5 million openings, 4.8 million hires and 4.8 million separations. Government sector had 770,000 openings, 321,000 hires, and 331,000 separations. Job openings fell 115,000 in construction and 61,000 in federal government. Separations fell 113,000 in accommodation and food services and 48,000 in arts, entertainment, recreation, while state and local government (excluding education) rose 27,000.
