Top Graduate-Level Occupations Projected to Have Most Job Openings 2024-2034

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has released projections for more than 800 occupations that typically require a graduate‑level degree. Among them, 40 occupations require a master’s degree and 73 require a doctoral or professional degree such as a Ph.D. or J.D. The highest average annual openings between 2024 and 2034 are projected for substance‑abuse, behavioral‑disorder, and mental‑health counselors, with 48,300 positions per year. Other top occupations include lawyers, educational guidance counselors, nurse practitioners, post‑secondary health specialty teachers, instructional coordinators, kindergarten‑through‑secondary education administrators, healthcare social workers, post‑secondary education administrators, and pharmacists. These ten jobs account for about half of all projected graduate‑level openings. In 2024, wages for each of these ten and most other graduate‑level jobs were above the national median wage of $49,500. The data come from BLS’s Employment Projections program.
