Rijkswaterstaat has released a draft plan to improve the ecology of the Heijense Leijgraaf stream along the North Limburg Maas. The plan, based on the European Water Framework Directive, proposes nature-friendly banks on both sides of the stream, the installation of deadwood to attract wildlife, and vegetation buffers. At the mouth into the Oude Maas arm the streambed will be raised with clay and gravel, extending to the existing low water barrier, enabling fish to enter from the Maas. The design also includes four pools, two wader ditches, and a wader swamp along the southern bank, with new diving points and a rerouted watercourse near Hengeland/Afferden. The draft is available on the platformparticipatie website and comments are accepted until January 6, 2026. A public listening session will be held on December 8, 2025, from 18:00 to 20:00 in Heijen.
