80 new summer linden trees planted along Julianakanaal by local schoolchildren

Local schoolchildren from Group 7/8 of De Avonturijn in Berg aan de Maas planted 80 young summer linden trees along the dike of the Julianakanaal. The new trees line the recently renovated Oostelijke Kanaalweg, completing a setup plan to tidy the area for future use. Between the bridges of Berg and Obbicht there had been canal‑adjacent trees; after the construction site of Van den Herik closed, the land was cleared for farmers. Storage and work sites are being removed, with trees replacing them. Educational material about the role of trees was produced by IVN Stein‑Elsoo and Stichting De Rollen. The linden’s winter root period will finish in spring, when heart‑shaped leaves appear and the Tilia platyphyllos emits a mild sweet scent. The avenue of trees will mark the boundary between the water and the road, which will reopen for regular traffic at the end of 2025.
