Retail sales rise 1.9 % in September 2025 quarter

Retail sales in New Zealand rose 1.9 % in the September 2025 quarter, up $472 million from the June quarter, according to Stats NZ. The increase was driven mainly by motor vehicle and parts retailing (+7.2 %) and electrical and electronic goods retailing (+9.8 %). Other sectors with gains included food and beverage services (+1.6 %) and hardware, building and garden supplies (+1.7 %). Supermarket and grocery stores fell 1.4 %. Eight of 15 retail industries posted higher volumes. Regionally, sales grew in 14 of 16 areas; the South Island rose 1.7 % to $7.7 billion, the North Island 1.4 % to $23 billion. Nelson and Southland had the largest quarterly gains. The figures were adjusted for price inflation and seasonal effects. The data are part of the regular quarterly retail trade survey.
