Scotland Prepares Seafood Industry for New EU Traceability Rules

Scotland’s seafood sector is being urged to prepare for new EU import rules that will require detailed traceability and processing statements for exported fish and seafood products from 10 January 2026. The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) says the changes will affect the entire supply chain, from fishers to exporters, and will increase the amount of documentation required. Processing statements will now be needed for all goods caught and landed by a UK vessel and subsequently processed in the UK, where processing includes cutting, filleting, canning, smoking, salting, cooking, pickling, drying or other market preparation. Statements must also list the weight of each seafood type used. The UK government is updating the Fish Export Service to provide the necessary certificates and has launched the Fish Trace Ship campaign to help industry meet the new requirements. Businesses can register for webinars on 10 and 17 December and sign up for a newsletter for further guidance.
