Canada’s Investment Income Balances Shift to Positive in 2024

Canada’s investment income figures for 2020 to 2024 show a steady rise in receipts and payments. Total investment income receipts grew from $131,228 million in 2020 to $253,133 million in 2024, while total payments increased from $115,395 million to $244,853 million in the same period. The resulting balance moved from a deficit of $14,100 million in 2022 to a surplus of $8,280 million in 2024. Direct investment balances rose from $44,477 million in 2020 to $57,201 million in 2024, with direct investment interest and profit balances also improving. Portfolio investment balances remained negative, falling from –$24,840 million in 2020 to –$44,545 million in 2024. Other investment income balances were negative throughout, ranging from –$3,804 million to –$8,343 million.
