A new RIVM study shows Dutch workers aged 55 and older are extending their careers by 2.5 years on average, largely in good health. The study, covering workers aged 55 and above in 2010, 2015, and 2019, found that 55‑year‑olds in 2019 are expected to work an average of 11 years beyond that age, compared with 8.5 years for the 2010 cohort—a 2.5‑year increase. These additional years are spent in good health and with full work capacity. During the period since age 55, workers spend on average 1.5 years in poor health and 2.5 years with reduced work capacity. The report notes that certain groups—such as those with low education or in physically demanding jobs—tend to have more years in poor health or reduced capacity. The RIVM suggests that employers and the government can support these workers through job adjustments, targeted assistance, or early retirement options.
