UK Announces First National River Walk: Mersey Valley Way

On 27 December 2025, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs announced the launch of the Mersey Valley Way, a 21‑kilometre National River Walk running from Stockport through Manchester to Trafford. The path, the first of nine new walks planned for England, will feature new signage and upgraded sections that meet accessibility standards for wheelchairs, prams, cyclists and horse riders. Local businesses are expected to benefit from increased visitor footfall, and community groups will have opportunities to volunteer in nature‑recovery activities such as pond restoration and tree planting. The Mersey Rivers Trust will lead delivery in partnership with Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, City of Trees, Lancashire Wildlife Trust, The Conservation Volunteers, Groundwork Greater Manchester, Manchester City Council and Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council. The project is part of the government’s pledge to improve access to nature and support the local economy.
