IRS Announces 2026 Standard Mileage Rate Changes

The Internal Revenue Service announced on December 29, 2025 that the optional standard mileage rates for 2026 will change. From January 1, 2026 the rate for business use of a car, van, pickup or panel truck will be 72.5 cents per mile, an increase of 2.5 cents from 2025. The rate for medical purposes will be 20.5 cents per mile, down 0.5 cents. Moving purposes for certain active‑duty members of the Armed Forces and intelligence community will also be 20.5 cents per mile, a decrease of 0.5 cents. The charitable rate remains 14 cents per mile. Rates apply to all vehicle types, including electric, hybrid, gasoline and diesel. Taxpayers may opt for standard mileage or actual expenses; once chosen for a new vehicle the standard rate must be used in the first year.
