Italy’s Respiratory Infection Incidence Rises to 17.1 per 1,000 Residents

Italy’s respiratory infection surveillance shows a rise in acute cases, reporting 17.1 per 1,000 residents in the week of Dec. 15‑21, up from 14.7 the week before. The national network estimates 950,000 new cases this week and a cumulative 5.8 million since surveillance began. Incidence increased across all age groups, especially children under five, who had about 50 per 1,000. Influenza positivity was 31.5% in the community and 46.2% in hospitals. Out of 3,744 samples, 1,654 (44.2%) were influenza, 120 (3.2%) RSV, 80 (2.1%) SARS‑CoV‑2, with other viruses identified. Sequencing shows influenza A H3N2 subclade K dominates, while all H1N1pdm09 strains belong to subclade D.3.1. High intensity noted in Veneto, Bolzano, Marche, Campania, Sicily, etc. Increased ER visits and admissions for respiratory syndromes were reported by several regions.
