UK launches AI tool to forecast A&E demand across 50 NHS organisations

On 28 December 2025 the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Department of Health and Social Care announced an artificial‑intelligence tool that predicts demand at emergency departments. The forecasting system is now in use by 50 NHS organisations and is available to all NHS trusts through the NHS Federated Data Platform. It analyses historical data, weather forecasts and admission patterns to produce day‑by‑day predictions that help hospitals plan staffing, bed space and resources, aiming to reduce last‑minute pressure and shorten waiting times. The tool is part of the Prime Minister’s AI Exemplars programme, which also includes AI diagnostics and an AI‑powered chat service for GOV.UK. Early feedback from hospital managers reports improved decision‑making about staffing and capacity.
